Corning Introduces Industry’s First ULL Smaller-Diameter Fibers for Long-Haul Networks

Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) today announced a series of smaller, denser additions to its portfolio of long-haul fiber and cable innovations, including the world’s first submarine and terrestrial long-haul fibers in a 200-micron diameter.
 
The fiber and cable innovations are designed to help network operators stay ahead of bandwidth needs driven by 5G in access networks, as well as high-performance applications like augmented reality and artificial intelligence in hyperscale data centers. They build on Corning’s fiber, cable and connectivity innovations by simplifying installation, extending capacity and reach, and providing enhanced density for today’s space-constrained environments.
The innovations include:
A pair of first-to-market 200-micron fibers for cost-effective long-distance reach. Corning® SMF-28® ULL fiber is a G.652-compliant, ultra-low loss, future-ready solution for terrestrial long-haul networks. Vascade® EX2000 fiber is an ultra-low loss, large effective area fiber for submarine SDM systems. Both new smaller diameter fibers enable up to 33% more capacity per cable with a lower cost per bit than current solutions.
 
Corning® RocketRibbon™ 200 extreme-density cable, the newest addition to Corning’s award-winning RocketRibbon cable line. Utilizing Corning® SMF-28® Ultra 200 fiber, it delivers the same fiber counts as other versions of RocketRibbon cable, but in diameters up to 15% smaller – reducing material and labor costs and speeding deployment in carrier and data center interconnect networks. RocketRibbon 200 comes with fiber counts of 1,728 and 3,456.
 
Corning’s new ultra-compact Fiber Array Unit (FAU), which provides higher levels of fiber-to-the-chip coupling density and performance. Leveraging Corning’s Reduced-Clad Bend-Insensitive (RCBI) fiber, this new family of FAUs is designed to help switch manufacturers solve bandwidth and density bottlenecks in data center switches.
