Vodafone New Zealand has upgraded its network using technologies from Ciena to help better support emerging bandwidth applications such as 5G, ultra high definition video streaming and the IoT.

The company has developed an agile, programmable network that can respond in real time to customers' changing demands.

Business customers will be able to use a new digital user interface to easily request additional network capacity in an automated way.

Vodafone New Zealand will also be using Ceina's Liquid Restoration to allow for improved service availability through flexible adjustment of deployed coherent optical capacity and route affected services across any available path in the network.

Vodafone New Zealand technology director Tony Baird said an adaptive network will allow the operator to support its growing enterprise customer base as they increasingly shift their business applications and workloads to public cloud services.

He said the deployment builds on the operator's established relationship with Ciena.

“Our long-standing collaboration with Ciena is a relationship we value greatly. The combination of top-echelon technology and impeccable customer service has put us in a winning position,” he said.

“As a result, we’re very comfortable in not only maintaining but growing our customer base, particularly those that require complex and unique network services.”
