Matrix NAP Info, a telecommunication company based in Jakarta whose interests include cable, data centres, the cloud and the Matrix Cable Internet Exchange, has announced an agreement with PT Communication Cable Systems Indonesia (CCSI) on the establishment of a subsea cable joint venture.

Called PT Varuna Cahaya Santosa, it’s a joint venture to develop the high-capacity Varuna Cable System (VCS). This submarine fibre optic cable will connect Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Labuan Bajo, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Bawean and Madura island and return back to Java island in one loop network with a total optical cable length of more than 3,400 kilometres.

The partners have also signed a memorandum of understanding with Mitsui relating to Mitsui’s interest in equity participation in the VCS. Discussions regarding this are still ongoing.

The VCS stakeholders believe that the development of a telecommunications network that expands outside Java requires the construction of a submarine fibre optic cable backbone network that connects islands throughout Indonesia.

In this collaboration, Matrix NAP Info will offer supporting expertise in the operation and construction of the submarine cables. CCSI will be responsible for procurement and deployment contracting as well as operation and maintenance. The construction of the network is expected to be completed within 24 months.
